Top 10 Secret Beaches in the Maldives

The Maldives stretches across 26 atolls and more than 1,000 coral islands. Most visitors see one resort, one house reef, one sandbank. We spent three weeks island-hopping to find the ten beaches the brochures never show you.

1. Fuvahmulah — The Oddity Atoll

Located far south of the main atoll chain, Fuvahmulah is the only single-island atoll in the Maldives. Its freshwater lake, unique wildlife, and consistently powerful surf make it a destination apart. Tiger sharks patrol the outer reef year-round — a magnet for experienced divers.

2. Dhigurah — The Long Island

At 3km long but just 250m wide, this local island has one of the longest natural beaches in the country. Whale sharks frequent the South Ari Atoll channel nearby, making it a snorkelling pilgrim's destination.

3. Addu Atoll — The Southern Frontier

The southernmost atoll in the Maldives sits just north of the equator. British RAF runways now serve as cycling paths, and the WWII wrecks in the lagoon are among the best dive sites in the country. Almost no resort visitors come here.

The remaining seven require a seaplane, a speedboat, and a willingness to share a guesthouse with fishermen. They are worth every rupee.
